My birthday's coming

My birthday is on the 21st. I'm turning 31. I'm not the sort to lie about my age, I know people who started saying they were 27 or 28 when they hit 30(and are still doing it-you know who you are!), but I just don't see the point. I think it's a little pathetic and continues that absurd idea that it's actually (gasp!) abnormal to get older(gasp!gasp!). That part of our culture that tells us we have to perpetually stay 19 never made any sense to me-even when I was 19. I can understand the need to take care of our bodies and want to look our best but I don't want to be a teenager in my 30s. I'm getting off the topic though.

Since my birthday is coming up I took out my diary from last year so I could read what I wrote on my 30th birthday. It wasn't a particularly interesting entry so I skipped a couple pages and found something that made me laugh so hard, milk from my cereal flew out of my nose. Especially since I've been lecturing my sister about how she shouldn't be so obsessed with feeling bad about her body and how society's image of beauty disgusts me. I went on and on about how we should love ourselves, and celebrate how different we are and exercise should be for health not to fit into a size double zero pair of jeans:

It's official. I have cellulite. I saw it today. It's ok. It's not that bad. But it sort of happened over night-that's the only reason I feel just a little disturbed about it. I was sort of freaked out about it so I had to call W(my best friend since 3rd grade) and tell her about it. She laughed at me and said welcome to the club. It's just that it caught me by such surprise. If it had started in my teens like everyone else I know, it wouldn't have been such a shock and I would just be used to it by now. But......ok, I've accepted it. I'm at peace with my cellulite and now I can move on.

I started typing "29" into the cardio machines a month or so before I actually turned. It helped with the adjustment.

I've had cellulite forevr, and I've never understood it, as I'm the cardio queen. Feel lucky you made it almost 31 years without!!

Happy early birthday.

You really need to write a book called "At Peace With My Cellulite," or at least an article for some women's magazine. We would all pay money to read how you accomplished that.

Happy birthday, Sweet Pea! I have never lied about my age either because I would rather people think I look great for 324 than wonder why I'm only 36 and look so beat up.

We have a sick culture for sure. Age is treated like a contagion, and it's a constant struggle not to buy into it.

I was lucky in that the cellulite didn't rear it's ugly head until my late 20's.
I f**king hate it, but I'm pretty sure it's there to stay, so I'm calling it a truce.

Happy birthday!

knowing you, even your cellulite is cute.

Maury-I'm envious of your cardio skills. It's not fair that men don't get cellulite! And dammit, they're proud of their bellies.

Hearts-Thanks for the tag! "At Peace With My Cellulite," would make a good idea for a book. I could try but then I would end up spending the 200pages making fun of all the other things about myself without actually accomplishing the 'how to.' Still though....

flutter-I've seen your pic! You're not so bad yourself hun! Thanks.

Oops, I meant happy EARLY birthday.

I'm really not that smart...

It's ok. I didn't really notice that part so how smart does that make ME?

Do you really have size zero jeans in the States??? My gawd - sizes start at an eight here (sometimes a 6) HA HA HA so when I said that I couldn't fit into my size 9 jeans on my blog ---- everyone must have concluded that I'm a big fattie????

LittlePea said...

I read once that Marilyn Monroe fluctuated between size 6 and 9-nobody ever called HER a fattie!

My sister is a double zero-I think thats a 22 or 23 in European size. I'm a little bigger than her-I'm definitely not a double zero. This is not the normal nor the healthiest of sizes. The women are all under 5 feet tall in my family so that's why we're so small not because we don't eat.-I just wanted to put that out there.

I agree with Flutter.

Your post made me laugh and laugh. I never had cellulite until my thirties or struggled to fit into a pair of pants or a little roll around my waist. It took a bit of getting used to.

But Florian was so proud of relaxing me so successfully, (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) allowing me to stop being so terribly strung out and skinny, that I myself started seeing the new me as a happy improvement.

And once I stopped shopping at the expensive french shop the trouser thing was also not too bad.
